Wat Chetawan

Wat Chetawan was established in 1636 A.D. while Chiang Saen was under Burmese rule.  It is located on the main street in Chiang Saen, and is one of the more distinctive temples due to the numerous figures and statues that are lined up by the sign at the front of the temple.

Wat Mahawan

Wat Mahawan is a deserted temple that was probably built during the 15th - 16th centuries A.D.  There is not  a lot of information about the construction of this temple.  The temple complex includes a short main chedi, and two vihans - the larger one is home to a headless Buddha image.  All of the structures were built in brick and coated with lime.  The temple faces east and parts of it, such as the boundary wall, were broken during road construction.

This temple is particularly distinctive due to its headless Buddha image.

Abandoned Temple No. 6

This temple is awesome because of its name, "Abandoned Temple No. 6", and because of the massive tree growing out of the stone structure.
It is on the main street in Chiang Saen and is dated to the 16th century.

Wat Roy Khol

Wat Roy Khol is one of the most distinctive temples here in Chiang Saen, largely because of the fully intact Buddha image.  Yellow is the color that the Buddhist monks wear in Thailand, and is used at this temple on the chedi and the Buddha image.
This temple has been dated to the 13th century.

Wat Mang Muang is another temple that is also on the main road in Chiang Saen.  It's estimated this temple was built in the 14th century.

Some information about the temple.

Very cool to see the trees growing out of the temple stones.

Wat Pha Buod

This wat is on the main road here in Chiang Saen.  It is smaller and simpler than many of the others.  Its most distinctive feature is the headless Buddha image that can be seen in the photographs below.
This temple is dated to around 1346 A.D.

Wat Pa Sak

One of the best preserved temples in Chiang Saen, Wat Pa Sak is located right down the street from our house in Chiang Saen.  Wat Pa Sak is actually a historical park, with the ruins of seven monuments found within this park.  This historical park is surrounded by teak trees and set back from the main road.  As a result, it is an extremely peaceful and relaxing place to visit.

The main chedi, built around 1319.

Surrounded by teak trees, Wat Pa Sak is an extremely peaceful place to visit.
Beautiful stucco work on the chedi.

The different ruins are scattered throughout the verdant historical park.
An image of a Buddha, found on the historical park.
Offerings to the Buddha are placed in front of the image.
